Black Heritage Month

The Center for Black Studies in collaboration with partners across Northern Illinois University, organizes events every February to celebrate Black Heritage Month. All NIU students, staff and faculty are encouraged to attend Black Heritage Month programs to recognize, learn, and celebrate the central role of Black diasporic experiences in U.S. History and globally – past, present, and future.

2024 Theme: African Americans and the Arts

Northern Illinois University aligns with the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH)’s theme each year. ASALH is the leading organization for the study on African Americans in the U.S.

African Americans and the Arts represents the infusion of African, Caribbean, and the Black American lived experiences. In the fields of visual and performing arts, literature, fashion, folklore, language, film, music, architecture, culinary and other forms of cultural expression, the African American influence has been paramount. Learn more about this year’s theme.
