About

The Center for Black Studies (CBS) was established in 1971 as part of the International Studies program, providing both academic and student services. For over 50 years, we’ve played an essential, unique role in promoting equity at NIU by supporting all students, while centering the experiences and needs of those whose identities include being Black or African American.

The center supports NIU’s mission of promoting excellence and engagement in teaching, learning, research, scholarship, artistry, outreach and service. We operate from a nine-room facility built in 1993 that contains offices for our professional staff and some student organizations, as well as a computer lab and a smart classroom.

What We Do

The center sponsors lectures, workshops, conferences and other student-oriented activities that are open to all. Our student advisory board helps plan and execute many of our programs.

Our staff advises and assists student organizations, works with Career Services to host career-related events, hosts campus visits, and develops community service and learning opportunities, including study abroad trips. We also work with the Huskie Academic Success Center to provide tutoring and coaching at the center.

In addition, the center is home to the minor and undergraduate certificate in Black studies.

Mission

The center facilitates work that makes relevant and deepens understanding of the histories and cultures of African Americans and the African diaspora. Supporting students, faculty, staff and community partners, the center advances cultural understanding, intellectual and leadership development, and professional growth, while serving as a collaborative and supportive space on campus for all.

Vision

Through a mission-focused culture, data-driven decision-making, a praxis that centers Black and African American diasporas and intersectional identity development, and the celebration of Black history and culture, the center supports the development of cultural knowledge, research, academic excellence, student leadership and community service.

Goals

To fulfill its mission and reach its vision, the center will:

  • Identify ways to enhance the Black studies minor and undergraduate certificate through course offerings and course enrollment, as well as further support the minor’s focus on the histories and cultures of African Americans with an appreciation for the historical, social and political influences of Africa and the African diaspora.
  • Sponsor academic support, graduate school interest, research, career and professional development, and personal and cultural events, including lectures, dialogues and celebrations.
  • Connect students to and/or create research opportunities in collaboration with affiliated faculty and campus partners.
  • Provide an environment of care and support for NIU students, faculty, staff and community members.
  • Employ staff members committed to student advocacy, advising and mentorship centered on positively impacting student retention and graduation.
  • Coordinate formal community outreach opportunities.
  • Advise student organizations directly connected with the center.
